~ Almost half of the respondents gambled in 2003. The three most popular gambling forms were social gambling (i.e., playing mahjong and cards with relatives and friends) (32.9%), Mark six (13.1%) and Soccer betting (7.2%).

~ The five most frequently reported for gambling are killing time (26.6%), relieving boredom (19.4%), socializing with friends (15.5%), seeking excitement (8.9%) and having been influenced by family members who gambled (7.2%).

~ 2.8% of the total sample classified as ‘probable pathological gamblers’ and 6.1%were designated as ‘at-risk’ for serious gambling problems using the DSM-IV criteria. There is a slight increase of 0.2%in the prevalence rate of probable pathological gamblers since the 2001prevalence survey.

~ The three most common beliefs about gambling endorsed by the respondents are “My gambling is under control” (78.7%), “Will power is probably the best way to stop gambling” (68.6%) and “If I borrow money I will pay it back” (53.5%).

~ Pathological gambling was significantly associated irrational beliefs about gambling (r=0.46, p<0.001) and poor mental health (r=0.19, p<0.001).
