主要數字、結果撮要1. Questionnaire Survey:

~ “Curiosity” (76.3%), “per influence” (67.5%), “seek stimulation, pleasure or euphoria” (50.6%) are the first 3 reasons for abusing cough medicine for the first time; while “Peer influence” (56.3%), “seek stimulation, pleasure or euphoria” (53.1%), “reduce stress, unhappiness or boredom” (46.9%) are the first 3 reasons for continued abuse of cough medicine.

~ 93.1% respondents continued to abuse cough medicine after first abuse.

~ The first 3 common venues for abusing cough medicine are electronic game centers (73.1%), one’s home (43.8%), and friends’ home (39.4%).

~ First 3 perceived consequences of abusing cough medicine are poor appetite (68.8%), deteriorating personality (60.0%) and dental decay (52.5%).

~ More good friends endorsing cough medicine abuse had higher levels of endorsement of cough medicine abuse (r=-0.32, p<0.001).

~ Better perceived relationship with mother had lower levels of endorsement of cough medicine abuse (r=-0.26, p<0.0001). 2. Focus Group:

~ All participants shared a view that their first use of cough medicine abuse was taken under the influence of peers.

~ All cough medicine abuser remarked that they had no problems at all to obtain legally controlled cough medicine from pharmacies.

~ Personal factors (self-awareness and insight) and support systems (family and service support) were identified to be the factors facilitating help seeking.

~ Raise awareness of the harmful effects of cough medicine.

~ Helping professional should be trained to identify the high-risk cases.

~ Parents should be educated about the signs of cough medicine abuse, understand the peers of their children and how their children use money.

~ Promote wider publicity of related service and greater acceptance of abusers of cough medicine.
